Keeping the Cream of the Crop

The fix is in. The man responsible for more than 1,250 U.S. soldiers dead, the one who has admitted torture in Iraq and Guantanamo, the guy who has drafted thousands of reservists and sent overseas indefinitely, the fellow who has spent an enormous increase in military spending, will remain as U.S. Secretary of Defense.

(Meanwhile, Osama bin Laden continues to issue threats whenever he pleases and "insurgents" (who include growing numbers of regular Iraqi citizens fighting an invading army) move with impunity inside the "Green Zone" setting off bombs whenever they choose and capture and kill foreign aid workers.)

Nevertheless, George W. Bush thinks Donald Rumsfeld is "the right person at this moment in our history in fighting the war on terror to lead our armed forces," according to the White House.

That would be a lot easier to accept if Americans were really any safer because of Rumsfeld's efforts, but on the same day as Bush pledged his support for the old man, Tommy Thompson, the Health and Human Services Secretary, confirmed what we all know: we're a lot less safe than ever before, "For the life of me, I cannot understand why the terrorists have not attacked our food supply because it is so easy to do. We are importing a lot of food from the Middle East, and it would be easy to tamper with that," Thompson said. (Gee, thanks for the suggestion Tommy. Even though professional terrorists probably already thought of it, I'll bet there's a domestic psycho or two taking notes.)

At least Thompson had the decency to resign.
