The Incredible Power of God

On Sunday morning god woke up and decided that it was time to re-arrange the continental plates. Seconds later the sea floor under the Indian Ocean jutted up some 50 feet and the entire island of Sumatra was shoved 100 feet to the northwest.

Within a couple of hours the Tsunami resulting from this act of god had crashed ashore and killed 100,000 or so unsuspecting human beings.

When some of the survivors were interviewed the next day they eagerly thanked god for sparing them.

Incredible.

After Nature let us all know who is really in charge on Sunday, the entire world rushed to help the devastated regions. Australia pledged US$27M, or about $1.35/Aussie. UK checked in with US$38M, or $0.50/Brit. Finland, US$4.5M, or about $0.90/Finn.

The leader of the free world, the compassionate conservative, our president, expressed his shock and awe and ponied up $15M, or about seven cents apiece for each of us. (Later he was shamed into upping it to $35M.) How much is $15M? That sum would finance the Iraqi occupation for less than five hours. (Watch the ticker at right to see it spent.) It would fund less than half a Republican inauguration.

And all that even assumes that our president will honor his commitment. Remember his promise for 9/11 aid for NYC, No Child Left Behind funding, Congo disaster support, AIDS funding to Viet Nam, ...

Shame on us.
