Iraq: state sponsor of terror ... not!

It's official: Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda have not been active in Iraq. That's the word from none other than the United States Department of State. The link below will take you to a spiffy little map showing the "Countries Where al Qaeda Has Operated." Conspicuously absent is ... Iraq!

This could raise some serious questions. What exactly did George W. Bush mean when he said Iraq was a "state sponsor of terror" even though the State Department says they're not active there? Did he realize that the State Department says that his buddies in Saudi Arabia have active al Qaeda operatives in their midst? But we didn't attack there. Just look at all those red countries ... just which one should we invade next? And I wonder why they are "red states" on this map? Is that just coincidence or is there something Freudian going on here?

U.S. State Department: Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda

(As of 5:10 pm (CDT) on 9/22/04 the map showed al Qaeda was not involved in Iraq. It will be interesting to see when and if the map is changed.)
